EU week of Regions and Cities

Editorial

The event on which this issue of NEU is focused has been very important for one of the main and most
effective actors in the EU policymaking, the Local Authorities, and in particular the Regions and the
Cities. As many of our readers know, Regions are pivotal in asking for EU funds and are the main actors
in distributing them. This has been true also in the past for all the programs, from Horizon 2020 to
Erasmus+ and the others. Furthermore it has to be underlined that cities have sometimes the dimension
of Regions themselves. Examples are the main EU capitals which mostly incorporated the hinterland.
The EU week of Regions and Cities 2020 has been in the reality composed by three weeks, the second
of which hosted the majority of the sessions. The role of the local authorities in every single aspect and
in all the policy sectors has been absolutely emphasized during all the Conference which saw two
exceptional speakers who insisted on this concept very much : President Ursula von der Leyen and
Chancellor Angela Merkel, in particular on the themes of the distribution of the resources of the Recovery
Plan and on building a more sustainable and human Europe.
Let’s see all of this in detail. Enjoy your reading.
