In the past weeks Europe’s neighborhood has been the cause of utter apprehension with Ukraine territorial integrity put to the test by Russia’s dispatch of troops to its border, which was followed by Moscow’s demand to the US to forbid access to NATO to Georgia and Ukraine in December.  As the Commission tries to represent the hinge that sews the torn edges of Europe stability together – proposing a new emergency macro-financial assistance package of € 1.2 billion and doubling its bilateral assistance to Ukraine in grants – whether it will succeed in mediating and in preserving geopolitical order in the region remains unclear.
