Critical and raw materials: what road ahead for EU self-sufficiency and security?

Reliable sourcing of raw materials has always been a pressing issue for the EU that for centuries has depended on overseas/non-EU territories to ensure its supply. In recent years, and specifically with the Covid-19 pandemic, the interest in self-sufficiency in critical raw materials supply chains made a heavy comeback in the geopolitical agenda of the EU. To this aim the European Commission will discuss the adoption of the Critical Raw Materials Act on the 14th of march. The Act has the aim of ensuring self-sufficiency along the CRM value chain while also demanding for the highest social and environmental standards.
