EU Enlargement and Security: What Perspective for the Balkans?

The presence of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell, at the Ohrid meeting on 19th March between Kosovo and Serbia is just one of many silent signals of a renewed interest of the European Union and of its member States in the Balkans. In particular, the pacification of relations between the Eastern Balkan countries and an extension of the principles and minimum requirements of the rule of law and democracy to these countries would be instrumental in imagining a new phase of enlargement of the Union. Talks of enlargement have been resonating for months but with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the attention on this strategic topic is ever so pressing.
